Mom attacks man during pickleball game for insulting her son

A mother in Florida is facing serious accusations after a pickleball game incident escalated dramatically. Michelle Bannister, aged 47, allegedly assaulted a male player during a match on May 31 at Treaty Park in St. Augustine.

The conflict reportedly began over a disagreement about gameplay but intensified when the man purportedly criticized Bannister’s son afterward. Bannister is said to have intervened by striking the opponent multiple times in the head with her paddle.

According to authorities, the nurse caused significant injuries, leaving the man with bloody wounds on his face. Bannister later claimed her actions were meant to defend her son, though investigators found no immediate threat that justified such a response.

Witness Pam Hatch, who goes by “Pickleball Pam,” mentioned that she rushed to assist the injured man. She described seeing numerous bloodstains at the scene and helping to clean up the victim.

When law enforcement arrived, Bannister initially provided a false name but eventually revealed her true identity when asked for her address.

She has pleaded not guilty to charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and providing false information to police. Her attorney, Rosemary Peoples, has argued that Bannister’s actions were a necessary defense of her child and contended that she is a model citizen wrongly accused.

Currently, Mr. Bannister is out on an $8,000 bail, with a court appearance scheduled for July 28.
