As the NBA Draft approaches, all eyes are on the Golden State Warriors and their interest in Trey Murphy III, a forward for the New Orleans Pelicans.
For a while now, there have been whispers linking Murphy to the Warriors, and recent reports indicate that negotiations are still happening.
According to Michael Scott of HoopsHype, discussions between Golden State and New Orleans revolve around the Warriors’ 11th overall pick. The Pelicans are expressing a desire to move up in the draft for specific prospects, with Tennessee forward Nate Ament being mentioned as a possibility.
It’s also noted that Golden State is contemplating trading down, potentially sending their 11th pick to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for picks 14 and 18.
Mark Spears from ESPN added more fuel to the fire by suggesting that the Pelicans are actively looking at offers for Murphy. The potential success of a trade could hinge on who remains available when the 11th pick is called.
Spears voiced, “The question is, who will be there at 11 when the announcement’s made? If the Warriors can grab Trey Murphy, I’m all for that trade.”
Murphy, 26, had a breakout season, averaging 21.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.8 assists. He shot 47% from the field and nearly 38% from beyond the arc, making him a sought-after player on the trade market.
His size, shooting skills, and defensive abilities could be exactly what the Warriors need to support veterans like Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
However, landing him might not be straightforward. The Warriors aren’t the only contenders; teams like the Pistons, Hawks, Spurs, Trail Blazers, Lakers, Pacers, Clippers, Nets, and Celtics have all shown interest at various stages, and rising demand could drive Murphy’s price up.
Then there’s the conflicting information regarding the Warriors’ stance. Recently, Sam Amick of The Athletic pointed out that the Warriors might not be seen as frontrunners for Murphy, with teams like the Nets and Clippers potentially leading the pack.
Yet, it seems Golden State is prepared to keep the pick if a deal doesn’t come together. General manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. has praised the draft class, expressing confidence in snagging a valuable player at No. 11.
ESPN Draft Analyst Jeremy Wu mentioned that the Warriors are focusing on immediate-impact players, with names like Adei Mara, Jaxel Lendeborg, Brayden Burries, and Karim Lopez on their radar.
As the draft draws near, a major question lingers: will the Warriors select a new prospect, trade down, or attempt to bundle picks to land Murphy?
What’s clear is that Golden State is exploring all possible options to strengthen their roster while keeping Curry at the focal point. It’s a delicate balance to maintain, but they seem ready to navigate it.
