Foreign Policy Specialists Identify Mike Huckabee With A Serious Case Of ‘Localitis’

Huckabee’s Remarks at JNS Policy Summit

At the Jerusalem News Syndicate (JNS) Policy Summit held in Jerusalem on Sunday, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee casually remarked that he had checked President Donald Trump’s Truth social account, half-jokingly ensuring he hadn’t been dismissed from his post.

“Before coming here, I thought it was wise to check President Trump’s social media—just to make sure this wasn’t my last speech in Israel,” Huckabee shared with the audience. “You know how he tends to fire people online at odd hours.” He added, “I’m relieved to report that so far, everything appears to be going smoothly.”

This light-hearted comment comes amid increasing scrutiny regarding Huckabee’s ties to Israel and public response to a memorandum of understanding (MOU). Following Trump’s signing of the MOU with Iran and the onset of 60 days of peace negotiations, Huckabee has taken to social media, expressing his dissatisfaction with the discussions.

While both Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance offered critical views of the Israeli leadership and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Huckabee maintained that there exists an “unbreakable bond,” subtly demonstrating his disagreement with the MOU between the U.S. and Israel.

Despite the memorandum’s nature, Huckabee has called for an “immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon.” He advocates for continued support of IDF activities in southern Lebanon, unlike Trump and Vance, who have urged restraint regarding civilian infrastructure from military actions. Huckabee persists in advocating for a firmer defense of Israel against Hezbollah, underscoring the complexity of an ultimate withdrawal from Lebanon as crucial for a lasting U.S.-Iran peace.

Interestingly, Huckabee claimed, “There’s no America without Israel,” emphasizing the intertwined legacies of both. This sentiment starkly contrasts with Trump’s previous assertions.

Peter Hahn, a history professor and expert on U.S. diplomacy, noted Huckabee’s social media activity as “unremarkable,” attributing it to “regionalism.” He defined this concept as a inclination among diplomats to prioritize their assigned nation’s interests over regional welfare or U.S. interests.

Hahn remarked that historically, the State Department often rotated diplomats to mitigate extreme local biases. He stated Huckabee stands out for publicly broadcasting his divergence from established policy, suggesting a notable shift in how policymakers interact within the digital age.

Trita Parsi, from the Quincy Institute for Responsible Politics, echoed concerns over Huckabee’s locality, noting his social media output aligns closely with the Israeli government’s standpoint.

“It’s inappropriate and illegal for an ambassador to contradict their own government’s policy,” Parsi emphasized, arguing Huckabee should either align with official policy or step aside.

Historian Walter L. Hickson criticized Huckabee for exemplifying an evangelical fervor for Israel that undermines authentic diplomatic efforts. He pointed out that demanding full security for Israel while it engages with Iran and oppresses Palestinians isn’t a practical diplomatic approach.

In response, Huckabee dismissed charges of locality, affirming his commitment to U.S. policy and its execution. He emphasized he serves a singular constituency, President Trump, and expressed dissatisfaction with characterizations of his loyalty.

This isn’t Huckabee’s first incident under scrutiny regarding his relationship with Israel. In the past, he suggested Israel has a biblical claim to territories, statements that stirred significant diplomatic backlash. His meetings, including one with former spy Jonathan Pollard, have raised eyebrows about compliance with established diplomatic norms.

When asked if Huckabee’s recent actions might jeopardize his position, Parsi remarked, “Given all the circumstances, this should be the final straw—he should be fired.”
