Democrat in a Swing District Concerned About Tax History as GOP Sees Chance to Gain Ground

Debate on Tax Record of NY Rep. Tom Suozzi

Democratic New York state Representative Tom Suozzi has asserted that he does not have a history of increasing taxes, despite his backing of significant local tax hikes during his time as Nassau County executive. He has also consistently opposed federal tax cuts championed by Congressional Republicans.

Suozzi has been a supporter of efforts to raise the limit on state and local tax (SALT) deductions. He voted against the Republican-backed Working Household Tax Reduction Act, which aimed to extend tax cuts from President Trump’s 2017 reforms and increase the SALT deduction cap from $10,000 to $40,000, as reported by various sources.

Many taxpayers who itemize deductions, particularly affluent homeowners in states like New York, California, and New Jersey—where property and income taxes are high—would benefit from the SALT deduction.

In a November 2025 interview on Fox News, Suozzi rejected accusations regarding his extensive tax record, claiming that assertions of his history with tax increases are misleading. While he expressed a stance against local tax hikes, he is in favor of national tax increases.

“I’m all for paying higher taxes anywhere in the country,” Suozzi stated, indicating a broad support for tax policies that might lead to increased taxes nationally.

In a recent discussion, he faced questions about his voting record, which some sources allege reflects support for twelve tax increases affecting voters. Suozzi countered that these claims were “completely wrong.”

New York is noted for its lack of competitiveness in state taxes, a situation worsening over time. The Tax Foundation suggests that raising the SALT deduction would greatly alleviate tax burdens for many homeowners in the state.

Advocates for the SALT cap increase argue it would provide essential tax relief to residents in Suozzi’s district, especially in Nassau County, where the median household income is approximately $146,202.

A typical homeowner in that area might have saved around $7,200 under a raised SALT limit—this projected benefit being one of the most significant in the U.S., according to analysis from various outlets.

While Suozzi generally supports adjustments to the SALT deduction cap, his voting history includes opposition to a wide range of tax reform proposals. For example, in 2017, he voted against the $1.5 trillion Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which reduced federal taxes while imposing a $10,000 cap on the SALT deduction. The following year, he opposed the Family and Small Business Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which aimed to make previous tax cuts permanent.

His record on tax increases goes back to his tenure as Nassau County Executive, where he supported a notable 15% increase in property taxes, labeled as the largest in county history. Additionally, he introduced a budget in 2003 that included a significant series of tax hikes, contradicting previous statements where he referred to earlier increases as “one-time.”

In 2009, he also proposed a 2.5% energy tax on various utilities across Nassau County, which was later repealed after facing public backlash.

Moreover, Suozzi’s financial activities while in Congress caught scrutiny, as his stock portfolio was reported to be one of the best among Democrats. His recent earnings were highlighted, as his stock value rose significantly, even surpassing notable Congressional investors.

There are ongoing investigations regarding his investment practices and adherence to stock disclosure laws, particularly amid claims of his support for legislation aimed at restricting lawmakers from trading individual stocks.

Records show that Suozzi’s financial status has markedly improved since he first assumed office. Notably, his congressional committee reportedly spent over $37,000 on properties associated with him, raising additional questions about financial propriety.

When approached for comment on Suozzi’s record and statements, a spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee referenced his alleged duplicity, suggesting that while he claims to fight for constituents, he has taken actions that may undermine their financial well-being.

Efforts to reach Suozzi for further comments were unsuccessful before the publication of this report.
