Phillies Pull Off Stunning Comeback Against Nationals
The Philadelphia Phillies faced the Washington Nationals at the top of the ninth inning, down 8-6 after Orion Kirkeling’s three-run home run had turned the game around. It was a tough moment—especially when the first two Phillies batters went down swinging.
But there was still hope. Trea Turner, the seasoned shortstop, stepped up to the plate, determined to give his team a fighting chance. And just like that—he kept the game alive with a solid single to center field.
Suddenly, the atmosphere shifted. It wasn’t over for the Phillies. Brandon Marsh soon followed with a two-run home run, igniting a rally that saw the Phillies put together an astonishing eight runs in just one inning, leading to a shocking 14-9 victory over Washington.
This marks the most runs the Phillies have scored in the ninth inning since September 27, 2015, when they similarly scored eight runs against the same team. What made this comeback particularly remarkable was that all runs came with two outs.
Once Marsh set things in motion, Bryce Harper kept the momentum going with a single, adding to the excitement. A crucial moment came when Bryson Stott had a chance at bat. He drove the ball down the left field line, perfectly placing it just out of reach of the foul pole. That three-run homer sent shockwaves through the crowd, putting the Phillies ahead at 11-8.
The offensive pressure didn’t stop there. Edmundo Sosa pushed the lead to 13-8 before Turner hit a home run himself.
After Marsh struck out to end the inning, the Nationals, and their fans, were visibly deflated. Luis Garcia Jr. hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide; the Nationals faced a difficult defeat after letting the Phillies bat ten consecutive times, with eight hits among those, including vital extra-base hits.
While the season is still young, the Phillies stand at 43-36, trailing six games behind the Atlanta Braves for first place. The Nationals, meanwhile, are 41-39, just behind the Phillies in the rankings, with the Miami Marlins catching up as well.
In baseball, momentum is key, and the Phillies embodied that spirit last night, demonstrating a relentless drive that will definitely be remembered for some time.
