Missing Texas Giraffe Sparks Community Interest
A giraffe named Gracie, who went missing from a ranch in Texas more than a week and a half ago, has been spotted resting on top of a sheep. This unusual sight has left locals scratching their heads and prompted her owner to offer a $5,000 reward for information on her whereabouts.
Gracie vanished from Cedar Hollow Ranch and was last seen on a game camera near Leakey, a small town approximately 160 miles northwest of San Antonio. It seems the local animal protection officials are on the case, too.
Ranch manager Vic Jones noted that the search for Gracie would resume this week as rescuers were unable to reach her despite some attempts. He mentioned that Gracie’s neck is quite substantial, the size of an average adult human, which certainly adds to the intrigue around her disappearance.
The giraffe wandered away from the ranch after munching on some foliage on a hillside that isn’t part of her typical range. It’s a bit odd, really; not exactly the usual stomping grounds for giraffes. Jones explained that Gracie managed to slip through an unfenced area beyond an 8-foot-gate. “It’s not completely fenced off,” he said, which is probably a detail that needs more attention next time.
Gracie is about 3 to 4 years old and one of only two giraffes on the property, which features hundreds of exotic animals. Her disappearance was a bit of a shock—one might think how hard can it be to keep track of such a tall creature? Social media users have had their fair share of fun with this situation, asking, “How do we lose a giraffe?” and jokingly suggesting, “Maybe it’s a short giraffe.” It’s funny, yet kind of perplexing.
Anyone who has seen Gracie or has any tips is encouraged to reach out to Jones or the Real County Sheriff’s Office. It’s a pretty wild story, and hopefully, it has a happy ending soon.
