Mamdani Backs Socialist Candidates in NYC Primary
New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani is throwing his support behind Democratic Socialist candidates in the upcoming primary elections. One of these candidates, Dalia Rizal Avila Chevalier, has attracted significant criticism due to her extreme leftist proposals, such as eliminating prisons and ICE. Additionally, these candidates are vocal about their anti-Israel stance, condemning what they call Israeli genocide and pledging to halt military aid to Israel. This trend highlights the increasing sway of socialist principles within the Democratic Party.
Brad Lander, a former member of the Democratic Socialists of America and ex-New York City Comptroller, secured a win over a key Trump impeachment candidate in one of the most reliably Democratic districts in the country. Lander, who identifies as a “liberal Zionist,” triumphed over Rep. Dan Goldman in the House primary. The Azure District, which encompasses parts of lower Manhattan and western Brooklyn, includes prominent liberal neighborhoods like Greenwich Village and Park Slope.
Lander’s victory represents a success for the city’s progressives, boosted by support from figures like Bernie Sanders and Mamdani. They rallied for Lander against Goldman, a wealthy ex-federal prosecutor who was deeply involved in Trump’s impeachment inquiry.
Goldman was elected to Congress in 2022, emerging from a competitive Democratic primary in a newly drawn district. He gained prominence as a Democratic adviser during Trump’s first impeachment and continued to criticize the former president once in Congress.
Rallying for the Left Ahead of Primaries
The race has drawn keen attention as one of the most significant Democratic primaries in New York City. Goldman and Lander have often clashed on issues like Israel, Gaza, and immigration, as well as pressing domestic concerns like housing affordability.
Throughout the campaign, Lander criticized Goldman for his support of military aid to Israel and his reluctance to call the situation in Gaza a genocide. Conversely, Goldman defended his stance on Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state, saying the electorate is primarily concerned with local issues.
On the topic of immigration, Lander has expressed support for abolishing ICE since 2018. In response, Goldman claimed that Lander was capitalizing politically on his own arrest at an anti-immigration protest.
While Goldman also proposes “abolishing ICE as we know it,” he argues that his approach is more nuanced, focusing on institutional reform through congressional oversight and legal measures.
The Democratic primary in New York’s 10th Congressional District not only showcased the rising influence of the far left but also spotlighted the divisions within the state’s Democratic leadership. Governor Kathy Hochul sided with Goldman, while Mamdani and Sanders rallied for Lander.
Although polling indicated that Lander was ahead in the race, Goldman asserted that he would be a stronger challenger against the Trump administration if elected to Congress.
Lander is poised to enter the general election as the frontrunner in a solidly Democratic district, where Republican-Conservative candidate Jennifer Moore is also running in November.
