Former NYPD officer Michael DeCillis triumphs in New York's Democratic primary

This is ‘great news’ for Republicans heading into midterm elections: Podcast host

Yemisi Egbewole and Rich Zeoli discuss the ramifications of the Iran deal for the upcoming midterm elections. Zeoli believes the deal will be advantageous for Republicans by lowering gas and oil prices. Meanwhile, Egbewole expresses concerns about the deal’s potential impact on food prices and the possibility of infighting within the Democratic Party. President Trump has taken to social media to commend the market’s favorable reaction to these developments.

In a significant political event, former NYPD officer Michael DeSillis won the Democratic primary on Tuesday, earning the party’s nomination against incumbent Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (R.N.Y.). This contest is one of many slated to influence the balance of power in the House, where Republicans currently maintain a slim majority. While New York Republicans often face Democratic initiatives aimed at flipping seats, DeSillis is poised for a tough race in November.

DeSillis advocates that Congressional resistance to Donald Trump is crucial in curtailing executive overreach.

New York City’s lone Republican vows to defeat redistricting threats

“He understands that our democracy is fading in real time,” DeSillis commented. His campaign site emphasizes: “Next Congress, Mike will fight to protect our rights and build guardrails to ensure our government serves everyone, not just billionaires.”

Throughout his campaign, DeSillis has highlighted his extensive public service background and deep community roots, pointing out that he is a fourth-generation Staten Islander and a third-generation union member. “I’ve spent over a decade as an EMT, assisted firefighters at Ground Zero during 9/11, patrolled New York City as a police officer, and taught special education in public schools,” he remarked.

This isn’t DeSillis’s first run for office. He previously attempted to secure a position in 2018 and 2022 but withdrew before the general election on both occasions. Now, in his third attempt, he frames Malliotakis as a pro-MAGA Republican detached from the state’s varied electorate, labeling her a “MAGA supporter.” He asserted, “President Trump and Republicans like Nicole Malliotakis are undermining democracy at home and compromising foreign affairs and security abroad.”

Malliotakis last secured reelection in 2024, where she triumphed over Democratic competitor Andrea Morse, a lawyer and small business owner, with a significant 63.8% to 35.8% margin. With DeSillis having advanced through the primary, he will compete against Malliotakis in the general election scheduled for November 3.
