Alan Wilson wins South Carolina Republican gubernatorial runoff with Trump’s support

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson declares his candidacy for governor

Trump-Backed Candidate Wins South Carolina Republican Runoff

COLUMBIA, S.C. – While President Donald Trump was not on the ballot, his influence was evident in South Carolina’s Republican gubernatorial runoff. State Attorney General Alan Wilson, who received Trump’s backing, decisively defeated Lt. Gov. Pamela Evett to clinch the Republican nomination.

The Associated Press declared Wilson the winner just 26 minutes after polls closed at 7 p.m. ET. This victory further underscores Trump’s firm grip on the Republican Party.

Interestingly, Trump had endorsed both candidates in the race. He backed Evett shortly before the gubernatorial primary, which saw her finish first among a diverse group of candidates, with Wilson trailing closely behind. As none of the candidates secured a majority, the top two advanced to the runoff.

During the campaign, Wilson, who was once second in the primary to Evett, also received endorsements from Congressmen Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, despite not advancing. Wilson’s support for conservative Texas Sen. Ted Cruz further highlighted his connections within the party.

In a surprising twist, Trump announced his support for Wilson just days before the runoff, a move interpreted as him covering all bases in the race.

After the win, Wilson, who had a considerable vote margin over Evett, gave a victory speech expressing gratitude towards Trump. “I think he recognized what we were doing,” he said, acknowledging the energy and fight of his campaign. He looked forward to collaborating with Trump going forward.

Both candidates went on the offensive in the final debate, hurling personal attacks and questioning each other’s records. Wilson positioned himself as more experienced than Evett, emphasizing his background as a veteran, prosecutor, and attorney general.

Despite the contentious atmosphere, Wilson welcomed Evett’s supporters and praised her efforts. Evett, who had the endorsement of term-limited Governor Henry McMaster, described Wilson as a career politician and highlighted her outsider appeal.

Going into the general election, Wilson is favored against his Democratic opponent, Jermaine Johnson, especially considering the strong Republican trend in the state over the past few decades.

Former President Trump’s robust backing was especially visible leading up to this runoff, reinforcing his significant role in shaping the Republican landscape across various states.

However, Trump’s influence saw mixed results in other races recently, with some candidates failing to secure victories despite his endorsements. The political landscape remains complex, showcasing both Trump’s strength and the evolving dynamics of the Republican Party.
