Jazz Chisholm Jr. Shines Despite Lollipop Backlash
It appears that Jazz Chisholm Jr., the New York Yankees’ second baseman, isn’t the pushover people thought he was when it came to the ‘Lollipop incident.’
During a recent game against the Detroit Tigers, Chisholm faced criticism for playing while chewing on a lollipop. Yet, he answered his detractors with a solid performance.
On Tuesday, he went 2-for-4, including a significant two-run homer off Tigers pitcher Casey Mize in the sixth inning. His impressive hit propelled the Yankees to a 4-3 victory.
After knocking that game-winning home run, Chisholm returned to the dugout, showing off a lollipop container for the cameras, which seemed to lighten the mood.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone praised Chisholm after the game, saying, “Lollipop Kid did a great job tonight. He can have all the lollipops he wants now, and we’ll be fine.” It seems Boone had a sense of humor about the situation.
While Chisholm admitted he hadn’t realized Boone referred to him as “Lollipop Kid,” they did discuss the matter together, focusing on “safety practices.” Boone clarified that Chisholm could enjoy his candy, as long as it remained in the dugout.
This season, Chisholm is batting .230 with 12 home runs. With this latest win, the Yankees extended their record to 47-31, keeping a comfortable three-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East.
Meanwhile, the Tigers sit at 34 wins and 45 losses, still fighting to improve their standing in the American League Central Division.
