Democrats shocked as socialists opposing Israel and capitalism dominate NYC primaries: 'The joyful era of the dirtbag left'

Shifting Dynamics in New York Politics

The recent primary elections in New York surprised many, particularly Democrats, as three anti-Israel, socialist candidates—backed by Mayor Zoran Mamdani—claimed victory. This development is seen as signaling a shift within the party, with voters increasingly leaning towards the far left.

Van Jones, a progressive activist and CNN commentator, expressed his shock during the broadcast, stating, “The roof of the Democratic establishment is going to collapse tonight.” He emphasized the importance of New York City as a battleground for both establishment and progressive forces, noting the clash that was unfolding.

In the 10th District, former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander defeated incumbent U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman. Similarly, in the 13th District, Dalia Lisa Avila Chevalier, supported by the Democratic Socialists of America, surprised many by defeating U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaira, reflecting a trend reminiscent of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s previous upsets.

Another notable victory came from Congresswoman Claire Valdez, who secured her seat against Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso by a margin of over 20 points for the seventh time.

Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania, who has been a concern for his party since his unexpected win in 2022, shared his astonishment over the results with Fox News. He criticized some winning candidates for their extreme views, noting that they advocate for abolishing several key institutions.

Fetterman pointed out that the candidates symbolized the party’s “total pro-Hamas wing,” declaring a “war against regular Democrats.” He also remarked on Mamdani’s controversial comments regarding violence in the region, mentioning an Al Jazeera journalist’s death in an Israeli airstrike.

Moderate Democrats are expressing their concerns as well, considering the recent outcomes indicative of an ongoing identity crisis within the party. Congressman Tom Suozzi highlighted the disparity between supporters of the Democratic Socialists of America and moderate Democrats, suggesting that urgent issues need to be addressed without resorting to extremes.

Rep. Greg Meeks described the night’s results as tough, while another moderate lawmaker characterized them as “seismic,” representing a significant setback for establishment Democrat values.

As the repercussions of these elections settle in, a centrist Democratic lawmaker commented that the rise of democratic socialists could pose serious challenges for party leadership moving forward. “To say it’s a headache is an understatement,” the lawmaker said, with another leader adding, “Oh my god. Please buckle up.”
