Police Investigate Assault on Street Vendor in Los Angeles

Authorities are looking into a violent incident involving a street vendor in downtown Los Angeles after it was caught on video and shared widely online.

The altercation took place near the intersection of Figueroa and 7th Avenue, where Alaveria Martinez was operating a food stall when a disagreement with another woman escalated into a striking confrontation.

In the video circulating on social media, the dispute breaks out at Martinez’s kiosk. An unidentified woman can be seen pouring hot sauce over the vendor’s hot dogs, ruining the food she was selling. In response, Martinez throws red powder at her, which seems to escalate things further.

As the video shows, the woman moves toward Martinez, who is trying to retreat. Eventually, the two end up on the ground, with the assailant repeatedly striking Martinez in the back of the head.

Several onlookers rush to intervene, attempting to pull the two apart, but the violence keeps unfolding.

In a subsequent attack, as bystanders try to help Martinez, the assailant assaults her again, hitting her in the head and face, dragging her back to the ground. Witnesses were left shaken by the whole scene.

Martinez’s family suspects that the attack could have been racially motivated. Her son mentioned that the woman had begun harassing his mother, making racist remarks and telling her to go back to Mexico before the incident turned violent.

Following the attack, a GoFundMe campaign was started by Martinez’s family, aiming to gather funds for her medical treatment, time away from work, and replacing her damaged supplies. As of Wednesday, the campaign had collected over $97,000 toward a goal of $120,000.

In the fundraising appeal, Constantino Garcia, Martinez’s son, described his mother as a hardworking vendor who suffered a terrible assault.

Garcia emphasized that not only did the attack affect her physically and mentally, but it also damaged the items she worked hard to maintain.

A witness, identified as Sebastian Gutierrez, who was making deliveries nearby, described the incident as one of the worst he has seen. He expressed his outrage, noting that he had witnessed multiple attacks before, but this was particularly distressing.

Gutierrez speculated that the assailant may be struggling with mental health issues, as he saw her knocking over merchandise from other stalls in the area.

No arrests have been reported yet, and the investigation into the matter is still ongoing. The video has sparked significant outrage on social media, with many rallying for justice on behalf of Martinez.
