California Sheriff’s Office Uses Drone to Disarm Suspect

In a groundbreaking move, a California sheriff’s office employed a magnetic drone to safely disarm a wanted man, protecting the lives of officers in the process.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office shared a video on social media that showcased the innovative approach taken to arrest 30-year-old Austin Carter, who had confined himself in his untidy residence. Law enforcement was chasing Carter for a parole violation, as he is listed as a registered sex offender with an extensive criminal record.

A SWAT team was deployed to the home on Thursday, but initial efforts to engage Carter in conversation for a peaceful surrender were unsuccessful. The sheriff’s office reported that negotiators attempted multiple times to reach him, but received no acknowledgment, especially since he had been seen with a firearm.

Officers used a specially designed drone that located Carter in a corner of his cluttered garage. They attached a high-powered magnet to the drone in an effort to seize the knife he was holding. Footage captured from the drone revealed it hovering above Carter, who appeared unresponsive. Suddenly, the knife was yanked from his grip and was left suspended on the magnet.

Following this, deputies deployed a robotic K9 unit, named Buster, to clear the garage’s obstacle-laden path, facilitating access to Carter. He was ultimately extracted from the house with the aid of heavily armed officers, despite his apparent resistance.

After his arrest, it was determined that Carter had consumed a significant quantity of narcotics while barricaded. Emergency responders quickly attended to him, and he was taken to a hospital for evaluation before being transferred to the Sacramento County Jail, where he remains without bail. Carter now faces multiple felony charges, including violations related to his parole.
