Ruben Gallego’s Political Identity and Spending Controversies

Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego from Arizona has been vocal about the rising cost of living, making it a key part of his political platform.

He pointed out that “the average price for a Super Bowl ticket is $6,773. That’s not just a game; it’s a luxury expense.” In February, he shared his thoughts on social media, emphasizing that for many working Americans, attending such major events could mean sacrificing several months’ worth of rent for just one ticket.

However, a recent Politico review of federal campaign finance records indicates that Gallego has been using campaign funds for a lavish lifestyle, including high-end travel, luxury accommodations, and family trips to Disney parks, covered by donor contributions.

Just 20 days after his Senate campaign began, Gallego, alongside then-Representative Eric Swalwell, initiated an event at the Super Bowl LVII in Glendale, Arizona. Reports show that $34,700 was allocated for event tickets and another $2,700 was spent at a local restaurant.

The fundraising committee managed to collect $56,505 but was disbanded on January 1, 2025. Notably, Swalwell has since resigned following serious allegations against him, to which Gallego claimed to be unaware, although finances of joint committees are public.

Further scrutiny reveals that since 2019, Gallego has requested over $18,000 in childcare reimbursements from his party’s political action committee. This includes payments for babysitting services related to his family, raising eyebrows about the appropriateness of using campaign funds for personal expenses.

“He’s treating campaign funds like a personal slush fund,” an anonymous source commented. Gallego defended his actions, stating that “this is not breaking news” and highlighting that it’s common for members of Congress to travel with family under Federal Election Commission guidelines, as long as expenses serve a political fundraising purpose.

Records also indicate that Gallego’s campaign has made significant payments to entities like a private jet membership service and luxury resorts. In total, about $115,000 was spent on one private jet membership alone, along with more than $60,000 at a luxury Scottsdale resort.

In an April inquiry, Representative Anna Paulina Luna requested an investigation into Gallego’s activities, alleging potential campaign finance violations. Gallego’s office dismissed the claims, labeling them as “right-wing conspiracy theories,” while Senate Majority Leader John Thune confirmed that the issue has been brought to the Senate Ethics Committee.

April also saw Gallego establish a legal defense fund amidst the scrutiny. His spokesperson described him as one of the most thoroughly vetted candidates after a challenging campaign for the Senate.

With 2028 presidential ambitions seemingly on the horizon, Gallego is under close watch by party members, potentially contending alongside prominent figures like Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and former Vice President Kamala Harris.

As of now, requests for comment from Gallego’s office remain unanswered.
