Many MAGA Republicans believe that staying in NATO is significant, according to a survey.

NATO depends on US military strength despite growing worries about commitment gaps.

Most Americans, along with a significant number of Republicans and self-identified MAGA Republicans, believe that remaining in NATO is crucial for the security and prosperity of the United States, a recent poll indicates.

A survey conducted by the Reagan Institute this summer found that 73% of Americans support continued NATO membership for the sake of national security and prosperity. This includes 64% of Republicans and 61% of MAGA Republicans. Details of the poll, which will be officially released on Sunday, have been obtained by Fox News Digital.

The poll also uncovered broad bipartisan backing for NATO’s collective defense principle. When asked if NATO members are required to defend each other when attacked, 76% of Democrats, 71% of Republicans, and 69% of MAGA Republicans expressed support for the U.S. responding militarily if a NATO ally came under attack.

These results emerge as President Donald Trump continues to advocate for NATO allies to contribute more to the alliance’s defense. During a meeting at the White House with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Rutte commended Trump’s leadership and recognized his efforts in urging allies to boost their defense budgets. However, Trump voiced his frustration with several European nations for not providing adequate support during the recent U.S. operations against Iran.

The Reagan Institute’s summer poll surveyed 1,555 respondents nationwide from May 26 to June 3 and features a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points. It integrated a variety of methodologies such as live phone interviews, online panels, and text-to-web responses.

To ensure the findings accurately reflect the U.S. population, results were adjusted based on demographic benchmarks from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2023 American Community Survey, accounting for factors like age, gender, race, region, and education. The poll also oversampled 331 MAGA Republicans under 30, which introduces a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points for that subgroup.

The Reagan Institute is based in Washington and supports a foreign policy approach characterized by “peace through strength,” advocating for sustained American leadership on the global stage.

In their meeting, Rutte reiterated the significance of Trump’s actions regarding Iran, stressing that it revolves primarily around Iran’s potential nuclear capabilities.

On the flip side, Trump has not hesitated to criticize several European allies, expressing disappointment in countries like Italy, England, Germany, and France, aligning his comments with his broader dissatisfaction regarding NATO spending commitments.

He commented, “We do not need their money; we have the strongest military in the world. All I seek is their loyalty.”

Interestingly, NATO’s Article 5, which forms the basis of its collective defense principle, has only been activated once in its 77-year history, immediately following the September 11 attacks, when NATO members declared any aggression against the U.S. as an attack on all.

Trump has long critiqued NATO members for not meeting their defense spending obligations, suggesting that the United States shoulders an unfair share of the security burden, at times even hinting at a potential withdrawal from the alliance.

Throughout his presidencies, he has made calls for substantial increases in military expenditures from allies, cautioning against leaving the U.S. to bear the cost of defending Europe alone.

As of now, there hasn’t been any immediate response from the White House or NATO regarding these developments.
