Hakeem Jeffries avoids inquiries about socialists shouting ‘you’re next’ at him

Leading Democrat criticizes GOP voter ID and citizenship legislation as a means of suppressing voters.

Political Tensions in NY Following Recent Primary Wins

House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries from New York sidestepped questions regarding socialist candidates and their supporters who shouted “Next up” during the recent primary.

After the primary election in New York, Mr. Jeffries faced inquiries about Dalia Lisa Avila Chevalier, a social activist noted for her involvement in anti-Israel protests and her calls for prison abolition. She has also characterized America as a “terrible disgrace.”

Jeffries clarified his stance during an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” stating, “Her views are not mine, and that should be clear to everyone regarding what unifies the Democratic Party.” He elaborated on pressing issues like the increasing cost of living, insisting that it’s a real crisis impacting hard-working Americans who struggle to make ends meet. “It’s unacceptable in the richest country ever,” he added.

Fetterman Critiques Democratic Shift

In an interesting turn, John Fetterman remarked that the Democratic Party is “firmly leaning toward communism” after the socialist primary victories.

While Jeffries sought to redirect his comments towards criticisms of former President Donald Trump, host Joe Kernen urged him to remain focused on the initial question at hand.

Kernen interjected, “We all agree with what you just said, but we were discussing whether the Democratic Party includes anyone who believes those things. They shouted, ‘You’re next’ at you. Is that really a positive trend in New York politics?”

Concerns About Socialism in Politics

Jeffries responded, emphasizing his firm rejection of those socialist ideals, adding, “This isn’t just a Democrats-will-be-Democrats scenario. Donald Trump is in the White House right now. We have to take this seriously.”

He continued to express his focus on alleviating the “national nightmare” attributed to Trump’s presidency and rising living costs. Kernen then inquired about worries that extreme left candidates might deter potential Democratic voters.

Jeffries addressed these concerns, reiterating that while voters often grapple with Republican failures, he was unnerved by the rise of the Socialist Party candidate.

Upcoming Political Landscape

Jeffries acknowledged that primaries will always be a part of the political landscape with 435 members in Congress, remarking, “Am I going to agree with every member? Of course not. But, I have a history of working with them.”

Meanwhile, three socialist candidates triumphed during the primary, defeating establishment-backed candidates, including Jeffries. These winners, Daria Riza Avila Chevalier, Claire Valdez, and Brad Lander, all hail from deep blue districts and appear poised for successful congressional campaigns.

In the wake of these results, supporters of Valdez could be heard chanting “You’re next” at a screen showing Jeffries.
