Vandalism on the National Mall Increasing
Recently, the National Mall has faced a troubling wave of vandalism, with multiple markings of “8647” appearing across various sites, including damage to the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial’s reflecting pool. Federal authorities are now raising alarms about this growing trend.
Katie Martin, the Interior Department’s Public Affairs Director, commented on the situation, noting a stark rise in vandalism this summer. “We’ve seen instances of individuals marking ‘8647’ and even writing messages in their own blood on the Washington Monument,” she said.
The concerns intensified following President Trump’s order to repair the reflecting pool, which had been marred by cuts and disturbances from protesters. Interior officials initially kept the first incident under wraps, hoping to prevent copycat offenses, but it appears a troubling pattern has already emerged.
On June 9, the first known incident involving the reflecting pool occurred, prompting internal investigations. However, Martin later acknowledged that this was not just a one-off event; it reflected a broader trend aimed at damaging significant landmarks.
In one alarming incident, an individual wrote “Here we come” using their own blood on the Washington Monument. Interestingly, the numbers “86” and “47” have been interpreted as a political statement, possibly referring to service denial in restaurants and indicating Trump’s association as the 47th president.
Moreover, a large “8647” message was carved into the National Mall’s lawn, which has put authorities on high alert for signs of political intimidation behind these actions. A police report indicated that the reflecting pool was vandalized just after reopening, revealing extensive damage along its liner.
Government officials have already arrested five people connected to this vandalism, and there are more charges pending. Among those arrested is former Olympian David Hahn, accused of interfering with park service operations.
The government initially planned to secure the reflecting pool area before Independence Day, but due to the rise in vandalism, the timeline was moved up. White House Press Secretary Taylor Rogers indicated that the new fencing was necessary to protect this historic site from further damage.
In his statements, Trump condemned the destruction while emphasizing the importance of restoring the National Mall’s beauty—a stark reminder that in the face of such vandalism, there are continuous efforts to preserve the integrity of America’s landmarks.
