New hints uncovered in the mysterious death of Summer Nash, volleyball star from San Diego

Mysterious Death of San Diego Volleyball Player Raises Questions

New information has surfaced regarding the death of Summer Nash, a 34-year-old volleyball player, whose body was discovered in the waters near a popular beach in San Diego.

Nash was found floating close to the Ocean Beach Pier by lifeguards on June 18. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at the scene, as per the San Diego County Coroner’s Office.

The exact cause of her death remains under investigation.

When her body was located, she was wearing a bikini along with a long-sleeved shirt, according to a spokeswoman from the coroner’s office. It’s worth noting that it might take several months before the coroner can provide a definitive cause.

Friends of Nash noted that she was a strong swimmer and had recently taken an interest in surfing.

There’s still uncertainty around whether a surfboard was found with her or if she was surfing at the time of her passing.

The strong Pacific swell that had previously caused incidents in Laguna and Santa Cruz was still affecting the California coastline on the day of her death.

Nash’s body was discovered near the seawall on the southern side of the Ocean Beach Pier, where powerful currents often wash away beach debris.

She had an impressive volleyball career, having played for San Diego State University and Florida International University before moving into coaching roles at respected programs like Florida State University and Stanford University.

Her last coaching position was at Stanford during the 2022-23 season.

As her friends and family process this unexpected loss, many are left questioning the circumstances surrounding her death.

Daytre Collins, Nash’s longtime friend and head coach at SDSU, shared that her loved ones have been speculating on how she might have died. “I just hope there’s no foul play involved,” he remarked.

Collins described Nash as a beloved member of the SDSU championship volleyball team, admired by all her teammates.

“It’s overwhelming how many people came forward to share how special she was,” Collins mentioned. “She truly deserves all of it.”

Matt Olson, the executive director of San Diego’s WAVE Beach Volleyball Club, stated that he had the pleasure of working with Nash for many years. He referred to her as a “fantastic coach” and “one of the most kindhearted individuals I have ever known.”

Olson also emphasized Nash’s athletic prowess, noting that opponents often hesitated to serve against her due to her strength and skill in the game.

Having transitioned to coaching beach volleyball after her competitive career, Nash began exploring surfing in recent years, which she had come to love.

Olson recounted taking Nash surfing a few years back, expressing that it was an intense experience but not surprising given her adventurous spirit.

Another coach, Nicholas Mercer, mentioned that some of Nash’s friends speculated her death could have been related to a surfing accident. “The last time we spoke a few months ago, she told me she was learning to surf,” he said, reflecting on their close friendship.

Mercer indicated that Nash’s family is organizing a private ceremony to honor her life, while friends are planning to hold a public memorial as well.

“We’re aiming to celebrate her life,” Mercer concluded.
