Dodgers’ Ohtani and Rushing: Tension or Exaggeration?
It’s well-known that there were some tensions between Shohei Ohtani and Dalton Rushing of the Dodgers. But, perhaps it’s being blown out of proportion?
Joe Maddon, Ohtani’s former manager, seems to think so. He described the apparent rift as merely a “bad impression.” In an interview on “Foul Territory,” he suggested a straightforward approach: “The solution to this is to put Shohei and Dalton in the room. Pitching coaches, managers—let’s just sit down and talk. It doesn’t have to be more complicated than that.”
The tension came to light during a recent game against the Twins, which the Dodgers won 4-3. In the second inning, Rushing seemed to disregard Ohtani’s call, trying to catch a tough pitch that ended up being a ball.
When they met on the mound, the dissatisfaction was palpable, and Ohtani had some words for Rushing. Although it’s unclear exactly what was said, Ohtani appeared quite agitated, while Rushing looked somewhat submissive.
During the interview, Maddon advised Rushing, emphasizing that Ohtani knows what he’s doing, adding, “It just makes the catcher’s job easier. Just follow his lead.” Maddon reminisced about his management days with the Angels.
In the game against the Athletics, Maddon suggested Ohtani intentionally walk Matt Olson, but Ohtani opted to pitch instead, confidently looking at his own stats on Olson.
Maddon, reflecting on the situation, commented that “Shohei has to take control of this,” acknowledging that much of the narrative could be amplified by social media.
Ultimately, while there clearly was a moment of tension, it’s possible that the fallout might not be as severe as it seems. Perhaps it’s just part of the game, right?
