A 12-year-old boy was saved by his brave brother after a shark attack that occurred about 90 miles off the Bahamas coast.
Parker Rohr, from Friendswood, Texas, was on a boat tour with his older brother Jack, 16, when their peaceful family trip turned terrifying.
The brothers had swum into the bay near Staniel Cay Island, where their family was staying, when Parker noticed an 8- to 10-foot shark just moments before it struck.
Parker recalled calling out to Jack, telling him it looked like a giant rock—only to realize it was a shark.
Jack mentioned that he thought the shark was harmless as it approached them. However, things took a dramatic turn when he heard a blood-curdling scream and watched as the clear water changed to a murky red.
Parker was able to swim back to shore before feeling the full extent of his injuries.
It was alarming when he looked down and could see his bones, describing the pain as if a knife was repeatedly stabbing and twisting in his leg.
Jack sprang into action, tearing off his brother’s bathing suit to use it as a tourniquet on Parker’s leg to control the bleeding while shouting for others to get out of the water.
Another member of their group helped fend off the shark until the boat crew arrived, but the type of shark remains unknown. The area is known to have aggressive sharks like tiger, hammerhead, and bull sharks during the summer months.
Due to how far they had drifted down the island, rescuers needed to carry Parker with his legs out of the water to get him back to shore.
His family reported that Parker required more than 1,000 stitches for his injuries.
They had no cell service on the remote island, and it took about 45 minutes for help to arrive.
When they finally reached the dock, an ambulance was on standby. Parker received treatment for significant injuries to his legs and feet, with his mother stating he needed around 30 to 40 stitches.
Parker shared that while he didn’t lose his leg, the situation could have been dire if the bleeding hadn’t stopped. Doctors advised that it could have had fatal consequences without his brother’s prompt intervention.
Parker is on track for a full recovery and expressed his gratitude for not bleeding out in such a remote area.
