Flight Diverts to Japan Due to Unruly Passenger
A United Airlines flight heading for San Francisco had to make an unexpected landing in Japan after an unruly passenger caused a disturbance, leading to police involvement and significant delays.
According to passengers, the difficulties began shortly after takeoff, as behavior among those on board started to rapidly decline.
United Flight UA858 left Shanghai Pudong Airport on Wednesday at 12:43 p.m., carrying 285 passengers alongside 16 crew members on a Boeing 777-300.
About two hours into the flight, the crew decided to divert the plane to Tokyo’s Narita Airport, where it landed around 4:37 p.m. local time.
A report indicated that the incident involved disputes between passengers and flight attendants, and once on the ground, Japanese police boarded to escort the problematic passenger off the aircraft.
Upon landing, at least seven officers from the Chiba Prefectural Police boarded the plane to remove the passenger at the center of the chaos.
Witness accounts described the passenger throwing documents from her seat, regularly shouting expletives, and appearing to hit herself.
This same witness recounted confrontations involving flight attendants, with claims that passengers accused them of oppressive behavior. During one interaction, the purser attempted to intervene but faced physical resistance.
“I tapped her shoulder a few times to get her attention, and she elbowed me back in surprise, unaware of who it was,” the witness said.
Disruption persisted during meal service, as the passenger threw food wrappers on the floor and continued shouting.
Air marshals issued a warning before the captain ultimately decided to divert the flight for safety.
Once on the ground in Tokyo, passengers experienced confusion over the removal process, and one traveler noted it felt like a mix of misunderstanding and mismanagement from both sides.
Following the unscheduled stop, passengers then faced a maintenance issue that caused further delays on their outbound journey.
Ultimately, the flight resumed around 6:15 p.m., arriving in San Francisco approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes later than scheduled.
