Reasons Algeria and Austria may want to win their last World Cup group stage match

Spain’s World Cup Win and Its Impact on Opponents

Spain’s recent 1-0 victory over Uruguay has likely complicated the World Cup aspirations of several teams.

This win secured the Group H title for Spain, setting them up to face the winner of the crucial match between Austria and Algeria, happening Saturday night.

Spain, currently ranked third by FIFA, is seen as a formidable opponent compared to Austria (ranked 22nd) and Algeria (29th).

Interestingly, both Austria and Algeria might find an advantage in not winning their match. As mentioned, Spain will face the runner-up from Group J, so a draw could actually be beneficial for Algeria.

If Algeria manages a draw, they would advance as the third place in Group J, facing teams like Belgium, Switzerland, England, or Ghana in the knockout stage. However, a loss could very likely mean elimination, so they must tread carefully.

As they prepare for their match in Kansas City at 10 p.m. ET, it’s becoming clear that Algeria faces a less than 1% chance of advancing with a loss. Even if their prior matches went well, that likelihood only bumps to about 9%.

On Austria’s side, the stakes are a bit different. Losing doesn’t doom them completely, although winning or drawing would mean a challenging matchup against Spain. So, it’s possible they might also hope for a favorable tiebreak scenario, but that clarity will unfold as the day progresses.

At this point, Austria has a 38% chance of making it through even if they lose; however, this percentage could rise to 65% with a Ghana win or 72% with a draw or win for Uzbekistan in their match against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

But if Ghana loses or draws against Croatia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo wins, Austria would be out with a loss. So, they’ll need to focus on securing a win or draw and then worry about the implications of facing Spain.

In summary, Algeria might prefer a draw to avoid facing Spain directly. Austria’s strategy seems more complicated, relying on various outcomes to ensure advancement. With all these dynamics at play, it wouldn’t be beyond reason for Algeria to consider an unconventional approach, such as scoring an own goal late in the game to improve their chances.
