Venezuelan Earthquake Disaster
Reports indicate a catastrophic situation in Venezuela following two significant earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude. The aftermath has been devastating, leading to approximately 920 fatalities, with over 50,000 individuals unaccounted for. In Florida, particularly within the Venezuelan community in Doral, volunteers are actively gathering and organizing humanitarian aid. Additionally, U.S. military personnel from Southern Command, including search and rescue teams, are on-site providing essential assistance.
Among the casualties is Daisy Maria Tovar de Hernandez, the wife of former MLB outfielder Gokis Hernandez. He shared the heartbreaking news through an Instagram post. He expressed, “You are and will always be the queen of my life… I love you, rest in peace.” He noted how she consistently found ways to uplift those around her during tough times.
Daisy was reportedly staying at Hotel Edouard’s in La Guaira, where families of players from La Guaira Delfines were gathered as the team prepared for a match against Aragua Tigres in the Mexican Baseball League.
In the wake of these earthquakes, the situation remains dire. Reports show that the death toll could be around 1,400, with 68,900 individuals still missing. Eyewitnesses describe scenes of devastation, including a witness who recounted the grim discovery of bodies while searching for people trapped under rubble in Calabareda.
Despite the rising chaos, some residents are frustrated with the slow response to rescue efforts. One local expressed concern, questioning why those who were alive beneath the debris weren’t rescued promptly, asking, “What are they waiting for?” The urgency and desperation for aid are palpable as the community faces this overwhelming disaster.
