US Provides Emergency Aid to Venezuela Following Earthquakes

Emergency aid is being sent to Venezuela as the nation grapples with the aftermath of devastating earthquakes. Two significant quakes, registered at magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, struck the northern coast over the weekend. Reports indicate that over 1,400 people have lost their lives, and more than 68,900 individuals are still unaccounted for. Rescue teams, alongside the US military, are urgently working to rescue survivors from the ruins of a collapsed 17-story building, racing against time as the critical 72-hour window for survival narrows.

As of Saturday evening, search and rescue operations managed to save 33 individuals from the debris. However, officials warned of the dwindling prospects for close to 50,000 people who are still missing. Venezuelan authorities confirmed that approximately 3,000 individuals were injured and a similar number are currently sheltered in evacuation centers.

The most severe destruction occurred in the coastal state of La Guaira, where the earthquakes caused extensive damage to apartment buildings, hotels, and public housing. The ongoing aftershocks are adding complexity to rescue efforts, forcing many survivors to remain outside in the sweltering conditions.

Among those rescued were a toddler saved by US firefighters, and two 11-year-old boys—one located by a Colombian team about ten feet up in the debris and another rescued by a Mexican team in Cala Barreda.

“In times like these, every life is hope for Venezuela,” remarked Acting President Delcy Rodríguez on social media following the rescues.

Experts are cautioning that chances of finding survivors decrease significantly after about 72 hours buried under rubble. With that critical timeframe having passed, uncertainty surrounds the number of missing individuals. While the government has reported hundreds are either missing or trapped, estimates suggest that just under 50,000 remain unaccounted for, slightly down from previous figures amid communication challenges complicating the situation.

Additionally, the US government has pledged $150 million in aid and dispatched Navy warships to assist with recovery efforts. In the tech sphere, Starlink has offered communication services during this crisis, providing connectivity to families in the affected region to help them stay connected despite the damaged terrestrial networks.

Pope Leo extended his condolences to the survivors and the families of those lost, expressing his heartfelt sentiments during a public prayer in Rome. He acknowledged the suffering of those impacted by the earthquakes, highlighting the hope and resilience of the Venezuelan people.
