JetBlue Flight Encounters Drone Near JFK Airport
A JetBlue plane reportedly collided with a drone while landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday morning, as confirmed by federal officials. This incident involved JetBlue Airways Flight 948, which had taken off from Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Preliminary information suggests the aircraft made contact with the drone at about 3,000 feet. The FAA stated, “The pilot of JetBlue Airways Flight 948 reported that at approximately 7:15 a.m. local time Monday, the collision occurred during final approach to JFK.”
Following the event, JetBlue informed that their crew “reported that the aircraft may have encountered a drone” as they were approaching New York. Fortunately, the flight landed without incident, and passengers deplaned as expected. Post-flight inspections revealed no damage to the aircraft or signs of a collision.
Both JetBlue and FAA representatives commented on the situation, with JetBlue emphasizing that safety is their top priority and they will cooperate fully with any investigations. The FAA is now set to look into the matter further.
Interestingly, the FAA has noted an uptick in drone sightings in the northeast, raising some concerns. Although flying drones unauthorized near airports is illegal, they continue to receive numerous reports from pilots and the public. Violators could face hefty civil fines and even criminal charges, potentially leading to prison time.
