Ohio Senator Moreno Criticizes GOP Governor DeWine for Prioritizing Haitian Migrants over Americans

Ohio’s Immigration Debate Heats Up

Ohio Republican Senator Bernie Moreno criticized Governor Mike DeWine for his support of Haitian immigrants who have settled in the state since President Biden’s administration. This comes as the Trump administration looks to revoke their Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

During an appearance on CNN, DeWine took a stand against Trump’s efforts to end TPS for nearly 300,000 Haitians, many of whom have made Ohio their home. He emphasized that these individuals are vital to the community, saying, “The people who go to work every day, raise their families, buy homes, fix up old homes, start businesses, they have deep roots in this country.” His argument centered on the idea that removing these Haitians would not benefit either America or Ohio.

While DeWine portrayed Haitians as integral to Ohio’s economy, Moreno expressed a starkly different view. He argued that their presence is actually a burden on the state. Moreno claimed that this influx has led to higher home prices, increased car accidents, and the draining of welfare resources meant for Ohio residents.

Former Ohio Governor John Kasich has also spoken in favor of allowing Haitians to remain in the state. In a video posted on social media from his upscale home, he appealed for a continuation of TPS and criticized the Supreme Court’s decision that favored Trump’s stance.

Conversely, some Republicans, like Senator Eric Schmitt from Missouri, have supported the Trump administration’s plan, urging the Department of Homeland Security to move forward with terminating TPS.

Markwayne Mullin, the Secretary of Homeland Security, has warned that Haitians need to secure permanent resident status or face immediate deportation.
