Attack on CBS News Crew in Chicago
On Monday afternoon, a CBS News Chicago reporter and their cameraman were attacked while setting up for a live broadcast near the Adler Planetarium, as confirmed by Chicago police and the CBS News Chicago station.
The incident occurred around 4:25 p.m. in the 900 block of East Solidarity Drive. According to reports, several men arrived in a truck, exited, and confronted the journalists, hurling racial slurs at one of them.
At one point, the men commanded their dogs to attack the journalists. However, when the dogs didn’t respond as expected, the suspects began to vandalize the crew’s equipment. Notably, one of the attackers shattered a photographer’s camera, while another smashed the windshield of the news truck.
Fortunately, both journalists emerged from the episode without injuries.
As police elaborated, two male victims were simply standing on the sidewalk when approached by a group of unidentified male assailants from a white truck. One of the aggressors allegedly directed a dog to attack a 54-year-old journalist while unleashing vitriol. When the dog failed to act, the attacker, in a fit of rage, damaged the victim’s belongings. All suspects subsequently fled the scene in their vehicle, and thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Reports mention that shortly after this, several individuals were arrested in a nearby Brighton park following a police chase, during which a firearm was allegedly brandished at another person.
A spokesperson from CBS expressed shock and distress about the incident, but reiterated relief that the journalists were unharmed.
The investigation into this troubling event is ongoing.
