Paris Deputy Mayor Blames U.S. for Heatwave

In a recent statement, Paris Deputy Mayor Audrey Pulvar expressed strong criticism toward the United States regarding the severe heatwave that affected France last week.

In a post on Instagram, she remarked, “Dear American journalists and social media influencers. Some of you have made fun of Paris for lacking air conditioning in every room. How ironic!”

Pulvar pointed out the U.S. role, stating, “As the second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases globally, you have a significant responsibility for global warming and its repercussions that we are facing in France. The fact that your cities are ‘90% air-conditioned’ is no coincidence. Here in Paris, we are accountable.”

Calls for Action on Air Conditioning

In light of this situation, there have been calls from scientists urging Americans to decrease their use of air conditioning during the summer, linking it to climate change.

Pulvar, who was elected to her position in March, emphasized the city’s efforts in tackling air pollution and making strides toward energy efficiency, suggesting that air conditioning may be worsening the global warming issue.

She added, “If every American city focused on transitioning to a more sustainable environment like Paris and other European cities, we could see a significant improvement. So, enough with the lectures. Now it’s time to take action. Thank you.”

In follow-up comments, she defended Parisian efforts to address climate change, noting, “Yes, there’s a lot left to do. The situation is far from perfect, but perhaps it’s not wise to critique those attempting to find solutions.”

Recent reports indicated that Paris has been grappling with unprecedented heat, with temperatures soaring beyond 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Tragically, at least 48 individuals have drowned in France while attempting to cool off in unauthorized swimming areas during this heatwave.

In response to these extreme conditions, French authorities have mobilized numerous emergency workers, enforced alcohol bans in public spaces, and restricted large gatherings. Moreover, the operating hours of popular tourist spots, including the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, have been adjusted to ensure visitor safety.
