Lakers and Kings prepare to compete for Jalen Duren

Lakers and Kings Eye Jalen Duren in Potential Trade

The Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings might be gearing up for a competitive bid to acquire a promising center.

According to NBA writer Sam Amick, Jalen Duren of the Detroit Pistons is set to meet with both teams for a potential sign-and-trade deal. This could mark a significant move in the upcoming season.

On Monday, insider Chris Haynes noted there’s a “substantial gap” between Duren and the Pistons as they try to negotiate a contract for the unrestricted free agent.

Duren, 22, is at the end of a four-year rookie deal that netted him $19.5 million. He was drafted 13th overall by the Pistons in 2022.

While he initially filled a supporting role, he has since emerged as a standout player, finishing last season with impressive rebounding stats, ranking outside the top 10 but showcasing his growth. He averaged 8.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game.

Last season, he played 70 games, scoring an average of 19.5 points per game. His contributions were critical in helping the Pistons end an 18-year playoff drought, finishing at the top of the Eastern Conference with a 60-22 record.

Amick also mentioned that the Kings are scheduled to meet with Duren first thing in the morning, suggesting the Lakers will follow up later in the day.

Lakers star Luka Doncic has expressed a clear interest in bringing in a big man to enhance the team’s pick-and-roll strategy. Currently, the Lakers have Deandre Ayton and Jackson Hayes under contract, though Ayton’s performance last season was less than stellar, averaging just 12.5 points, 8 rebounds, and 1 block per game.

Doncic has also emphasized the need for more shooting options this offseason, and landing Duren could be a step in addressing those needs.

Amick indicated that the Kings are considering offering Domantas Sabonis in exchange for Duren, although it’s uncertain how the Pistons would react to such a proposal. However, it’s clear that the Kings are genuinely interested in acquiring the 22-year-old center.
