Cameron Carr’s NBA Draft Night Journey

On NBA draft night, Cameron Carr rode a rollercoaster of emotions. The former Baylor standout waited longer than he had hoped to hear his name called, but the news of being traded to the Lakers shifted his focus and sparked excitement as he considered joining one of the league’s most iconic teams.

After the Knicks picked Carr at 24th overall, he soon learned that his rights would be heading to Los Angeles. As he made his way to shake hands with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, the cameras caught the shock on his face.

“It’s being traded,” Carr expressed, still processing the moment. This surprise quickly went viral on social media, but it was just the start of his experience that night.

When asked about joining the Lakers, Carr was visibly thrilled. “Ah, I remember the greatness and rich tradition of basketball,” he remarked. “I think I’ll fit in well. We can become best friends.”

The Lakers traded up from 25th to 24th to secure Carr, who, at 6-foot-5, has made a name for himself as a dynamic player. His journey hasn’t been without obstacles; after injuries hampered his early career at Tennessee, a transfer to Baylor allowed him to emerge as a force, averaging 18.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.3 blocks per game.

His performance at the NBA Draft Combine only enhanced his profile. With a remarkable 43-inch vertical jump and a wingspan measuring nearly 7 feet, Carr attracted attention during scrimmages, solidifying his first-round pick status.

As for what Lakers fans could expect from him, Carr believes the qualities that led to his draft are what will help him succeed in the NBA. “Being who I am and knowing what got me here is what will keep me here,” he noted. “I know I have good athletic ability, so I’m going to use that to my advantage.”

Reflecting on his path to Los Angeles, he emphasized determination. “Everything. It took everything I had to get here. I’ve been as low as I can be and as high as I can be, so it’s just a blessing. Patience is a virtue,” he shared.

Carr’s personality also shone through. Before the draft, he humorously mentioned he would prefer to guard Anthony Edwards over the reigning MVP, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. “I don’t deal with failure,” he quipped.

Though early in his career with the Lakers, Carr’s confidence and energy from draft night already left a strong impression. He’s eager to prove himself, stating, “It means the world to me that they took a chance on me and wanted to add me to their organization. When I step in, I want to be as productive and dominant as I have been.”
