Trump Calls for Congressional Action on Birthright Citizenship
President Donald Trump has responded to the Supreme Court’s recent decision regarding birthright citizenship, urging Congress to take steps to limit citizenship for children born to individuals living in the U.S. illegally or temporarily.
Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the ruling in a post on Truth Social, stating, “The Supreme Court upheld Birthright Citizenship, which is too bad for our Country. We can easily make it up in Congress through Legislation, with the support of the President, that has now been determined during this process.”
He continued, “No long and unwieldy Constitutional Amendment is necessary! Congress should start TODAY to work on ending this expensive and unfair practice to our Country. They will have my Complete and Total Support!”
Senator Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, had preemptively introduced an amendment in April aiming to limit birthright citizenship, anticipating that the Supreme Court might not rule favorably. The recent decision has renewed his enthusiasm for the proposal.
“Months before the Supreme Court ever ruled, I had a feeling exactly this would happen. An executive order was never going to be strong enough to permanently fix birthright citizenship, no matter how good the intentions behind it were. That’s why I filed a constitutional amendment early this year instead of waiting around to see how the courts would rule,” he stated. “This decision confirms what I already suspected. If we want real, lasting change, it has to come through the amendment process.”
Senator Mike Lee from Utah also weighed in, calling for restrictions on birthright citizenship, particularly concerning U.S. territories.
“At a minimum, it’s time to limit birthright citizenship as to U.S. territories,” he said on social media, suggesting the president should direct Homeland Security to revise existing policies that allow certain foreign nationals to enter specific territories without a visa.
In a somewhat humorous turn, he posed a question: “If a woman gives birth at the Supreme Court, is her baby entitled to automatic status as a justice?”
Trump also took to Truth Social to make a satirical remark about the situation, congratulating China on their “massive Birthright Citizenship WIN!”
