Mother of Murdered Teen Critiques Sanctuary Policies

On Tuesday, the mother of an 18-year-old girl who was murdered spoke out against Democratic lawmakers, claiming their sanctuary policies prioritize illegal immigrants over her daughter’s life.

Jessica Gaumont, whose daughter Sheridan Gaumont was killed, expressed her grief while denouncing these sanctuary policies during a House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing focused on immigration enforcement. She highlighted how such policies, particularly in Illinois and California, seem to protect criminal aliens more than American citizens. Jose Medina Medina, charged with Sheridan’s murder, is an illegal Venezuelan immigrant who had previously been arrested for shoplifting and released back into Chicago.

Gaumont recounted the tragic night of her daughter’s death, stating, “The man accused of murdering my daughter…shouldn’t have been here. He was an illegal immigrant who was allowed to roam the streets of Chicago, even after committing a crime and having an outstanding warrant.” She pointed to what she called failed border policies and sanctuary city laws, accusing leaders of failing to cooperate with ICE, ultimately leading to her daughter’s death.

“The question is straightforward: When did protecting the American people stop being the top priority?” she asked. She stressed the need for clarity on why the lives of American citizens seem to take a backseat.

“I need an explanation,” Gaumont insisted. “In what world does a visible girl become invisible to those responsible for her protection?” She demanded answers about why sanctuary policies are deemed more critical than her daughter’s life.

During the hearing, she remarked on the apparent disconnection between her pain and the responses from some lawmakers. After one response expressed sympathy, she challenged, “You won’t! You don’t feel my pain,” emphasizing that there shouldn’t be any caveats when discussing the loss of a child.

Gaumont urged lawmakers to confront the reality of her situation. “Please explain to me why illegal immigrants are more important than my daughter.” The hearing saw attendance from Democratic Representatives Jamie Raskin and Priya Jayapal.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Medina-Medina had been detained at the border and released in May 2023 during the Biden administration. He was later apprehended for shoplifting in Chicago and released again in June. The concept of sanctuary cities often limits cooperation with federal immigration authorities, which has been a point of criticism among those who advocate for stricter immigration enforcement. Chicago, under Democratic leadership, is designated as a sanctuary city, as are many jurisdictions across the country.
