Vigilante Group in Mexico Gains Local Support
In a surprising turn of events, a vigilante group in Mexico is stirring up public sentiment as they actively hunt down thieves. They’ve been leaving audiotapes for local authorities, prompting an investigation aimed at apprehending the group.
Details about this mysterious figure—or figures—remain scarce. Community members in Lagos de Moreno, a municipality in Jalisco state, have started referring to one individual as the “Batman of Lagos de Moreno.” In just a few days, this group managed to track down and restrain five motorcycle thieves, tying them to telephone poles for the locals to discover the next morning.
The first report emerged on June 12. It detailed authorities encountering a man bound to a telephone pole with the word “Rata” (meaning “thief”) written on his forehead. Nearby, they found a stolen motorcycle linked to the man. This incident comes amid a troubling surge in motorcycle thefts, which have exceeded 30 incidents in the area this year.
The following day, four additional men were found in a similar situation, with some incidents involving poster boards containing dire warnings against criminal activity.
Instead of pursuing theft suspects, authorities have opted to treat these individuals as victims of assault or kidnapping, starting investigations to identify the vigilante group. Interestingly, none of the stolen property suspects have pressed charges against the group or cooperated with police efforts.
Authorities remain uncertain whether these vigilantes are operating alone or if they may be part of a larger group, potentially involving cartel members who are taking action against crime. Given the prominence of the Cartel Jalisco New Generation in the region, the latter seems somewhat plausible.
The rise in popularity of vigilante actions comes at a time when Mexico is grappling with high rates of violent crime linked to drug cartels. While the United States has been pushing Mexico to tackle these criminal organizations, the Mexican government often defends its position by invoking national sovereignty, limiting external intervention.
The situation draws eerie parallels to themes seen in popular culture, reminiscent of narratives where vigilante justice plays a central role. One such film has grossed over $67 million globally and remains among the top listings on streaming platforms like Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
