Trump Comments on Supreme Court Birthright Citizenship Ruling
President Donald Trump reacted to the Supreme Court’s decision to reject his push for changes to birthright citizenship, humorously congratulating Chinese leader Xi Jinping and China.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump remarked, “I would like to congratulate President Xi Jinping and the great nation of the People’s Republic of China on achieving widespread birthright citizenship!”
This statement followed a Supreme Court ruling, which decided 5-4 against Trump’s executive order aimed at changing birthright citizenship, stating that it “violates the 14th Amendment.”
While the ruling was technically 6-3, reporter Neil Munro from Breitbart News noted that Justice Brett Kavanaugh suggested that politicians like Trump could alter the rules through legislation.
The decision was indeed 6-3 against Trump; nevertheless, Kavanaugh highlighted the potential for legislative changes. “Citizenship, then and now, was the right to have rights and to participate freely in our political community. The framers of the Fourteenth Amendment extended that promise to ‘all persons born free in this land,'” wrote Chief Justice John Roberts for the majority. “We keep that promise today.”
This ruling clarified that citizenship is guaranteed for the children of illegal immigrants, foreign workers, and even tourists who are funded by the government.
Trump’s executive order from January 20, 2025, remarked that, “The privilege of American citizenship is an immeasurable and profound gift.” Moreover, it claimed that “the Fourteenth Amendment has never been interpreted to extend citizenship universally to all persons born in the United States. The Fourteenth Amendment has always excluded those born in the U.S. but not ‘subject to the jurisdiction.'”
Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, Trump expressed on Truth Social that “Congress should start working today to end birthright citizenship.”
In January, reports surfaced from Breitbart News, citing investigative journalist Peter Schweitzer in his book, The Invisible Coup: How American Elites and Foreign Powers Use Immigration as a Weapon, revealing that “more than 1 million Chinese” who have U.S. citizenship and were raised in China are expected to vote in U.S. elections soon.
