Socialist Democratic Party Deepens Rift Ahead of 2026 Primaries
The discussion on the rise of socialism within the Democratic Party continues, especially within the context of the upcoming Colorado primary. Tiffany Smiley and Richard Fowler explored how candidates aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) might impact party unity. They also examined whether the DSA’s policies could be contributing to rising crime rates in urban areas.
In a significant development, Democratic Representative Manny Lutinel from Colorado’s 8th Congressional District won his primary, positioning himself to challenge incumbent Republican Gabe Evans in a race characterized as one of the most competitive in the country. This election is particularly consequential as it could influence the balance of power in Washington, D.C., where Republicans currently control both the House and the Senate, along with the presidency.
Lutinel, a former state representative, has made it clear that he aims to protect government initiatives from potential Republican budget cuts and defend minority interests against government overreach. His primary campaign focuses on issues such as safeguarding Social Security and Medicaid, enhancing tax credits, reversing the immigration policies of former President Trump, and addressing housing costs.
“I was raised on Medicaid. It’s deeply personal for me, but now Donald Trump and Gabe Evans are trying to destroy it to benefit their wealthy friends,” Lutinel stated in a campaign video.
He expressed concerns over Trump’s impact on democracy and the economic landscape, particularly for workers and Latino immigrants across the nation.
Republicans have targeted Lutinel by drawing comparisons to New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani, suggesting that Lutinel’s platform—which includes raising taxes on the wealthy and advocating for universal healthcare—will not resonate with Colorado voters. A spokesperson for Gabe Evans stated, “These ideas might work in New York, but they aren’t appealing to Coloradans.”
The Congressional Leadership Fund, a fundraising arm of the House Republican Party, is actively highlighting Lutinel’s relationship to Mamdani, using a video showing Lutinel at a campaign event alongside him to bolster their argument.
In an advertising campaign, the CLF pointedly asked, “What do the CO-08 election and the New York City mayoral election have in common? Democrat Manny Lutinel is campaigning in both.” With the primary behind him, Lutinel is now set to face Evans in the general election on November 3.
