Major Upset in Colorado Primary: DeGette Defeated

In a surprising turn of events during Tuesday night’s primary, Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.), a long-time incumbent, was defeated by challenger Melat Quiros, a 29-year-old backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). This outcome has been seen as a significant win for the socialist left, especially as it follows a similar victory in New York City just last week.

The DSA is keen to highlight DeGette’s loss as a sign of their growing influence within the party. They even took to social media, suggesting that what happened on the East Coast could quickly spread to the West.

Challenges Ahead for Quiros

If elected in November, Quiros could join the far-left group known as the Squad, marking him as one of the few outspoken socialists in Congress. His campaign received endorsements from high-profile figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, along with support from the Justice Democrats, a group that seeks to challenge incumbents. Controversial personality Hasan Piker also backed Quiros, adding to his profile in a highly polarized political climate.

Throughout her campaign, DeGette, a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, emphasized her seniority and legislative experience to argue that she could advance a Medicare-for-all proposal. She also pointed to her role in managing Trump’s impeachment as a key qualification.

While the candidates largely aligned on policy issues, they differed significantly on topics surrounding Israel and anti-Semitism. Quiros criticized DeGette for accepting donations from corporate PACs, aiming to position himself as a more authentic choice for progressive voters.

Controversial Comments

Quiros, who is both a lawyer and a doctoral student, stirred controversy in 2023 when he was terminated from his firm after publishing an open letter that suggested pro-Palestinian protests weren’t inherently anti-Semitic, which put him at odds with mainstream views. He recently described the October 2023 attack on Israel as an “inevitable outcome of apartheid,” creating further discussion around his stance on critical issues. When discussing violence against Jews, he stated that it was hard to know the motivations behind certain attackers, claiming, “We don’t know what was going through the perpetrator’s mind.”

In contrast, DeGette expressed her shock at Quiros’s statements, labeling them as condoning terrorism. She took to social media to voice her disgust over his remarks, seeking to draw a clear line between herself and her challenger.

Colorado’s 1st Congressional District is recognized as a solidly Democratic area, having favored Kamala Harris by a wide margin in the 2024 election. Ironic as it seems, the competitive nature of this primary may have been complicated by Wanda James, another candidate for DeGette’s seat, though she didn’t pose a direct threat like Quiros did.
