Harry and Meghan's visit to the UK uncertain due to disagreement over security arrangements

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Upcoming UK Visit Faces Uncertainty

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s planned return to the UK has been overshadowed by concerns regarding their safety. Reports are suggesting that their visit may not happen as intended due to these issues.

This marks Princess Lilibet and Prince Archie’s first trip back to the UK in four years. However, complications surrounding police protection could significantly impact their visit, with Prince Harry seeking arrangements on royal grounds for the safety of his family.

Having stepped down from their senior royal duties in 2020, there’s been a palpable sense of frustration at the palace over the disruptions caused by ongoing travel issues, according to royal expert Kate Nicholl.

Nicholl explained, “Harry understands he’s not automatically entitled to taxpayer-funded police protection during his stay in the UK. This trip was planned months in advance, and the King was made aware.” She also noted that while the King welcomed Harry and Meghan to the royal residence, their protection would only be guaranteed there, not during travel across the country.

In a discussion about Harry’s current situation, Nicholl emphasized that, “He’s financially independent now and has chosen to distance himself from royal responsibilities.” This point reflects the significant transition Harry has gone through since stepping back from royal duties.

Reports indicate that the Sussexes were informed a formal review of their security request was due in March, but it appears that this review has not been conducted by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royal Families and Public Figures (RAVEC).

Prince Harry, in December, reached out to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmoud to request a complete security assessment, aiming to reassess the threat level for his visit.

Previously, during a court hearing regarding his appeal on security measures, Harry’s legal team argued that the couple felt they were left without royal protection, which contributed to their decision to step back from their royal roles. Harry expressed a desire to keep supporting royal initiatives, albeit as a privately funded member.

In May 2025, the British Crown withdrew its appeal related to Harry’s security, and the Court of Appeal ruled that Harry was treated equitably by the committee involved, which assesses protection on a case-by-case basis during his visits to the UK.

Recently, Archewell—a foundation associated with the Sussexes—acknowledged that Harry’s UK visit would include both public and private engagements. They also highlighted that safe accommodation is just part of the comprehensive protection plan required for such a high-profile visit.

Archewell further stated that the effectiveness of any protective measures depends on an independent assessment, which has yet to happen.

While there appears to be genuine excitement at the palace about Harry’s potential return with his children, it is complicated by unresolved security concerns. According to Nicholl, the King, who is facing health challenges and has not seen Harry since the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, is eager to reconnect with his family.

In 2020, Harry and Meghan decided to step back from royal duties, citing overwhelming media scrutiny and a lack of support from the palace as key reasons for their departure. The complexities surrounding their return, especially given the sensitive context of family dynamics, continue to evolve.
