Fetterman cautions about a potential 'constitutional crisis' due to Mamdani's defiance of the Supreme Court

Fetterman Critiques Democrats Over Mamdani’s Defiance of Supreme Court Ruling

Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania has voiced his disapproval of fellow Democrats who have not condemned New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s refusal to acknowledge a recent Supreme Court ruling. Fetterman believes that such defiance could lead to a constitutional crisis. He has pointed out what he sees as a double standard and stressed that respecting court decisions is crucial for the integrity of democracy. It’s concerning, he noted, that many Democrats aren’t speaking out enough on this issue.

In his remarks on “Saturday in America,” Fetterman highlighted his concerns regarding Mamdani’s pledge to defy the ruling, which bolsters former President Trump’s authority to eliminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian and Syrian immigrants. He remarked, “I’ve never seen the mayor of New York so upset when he says he’s going to defy a Supreme Court decision,” during his interview with host Kayleigh McEnany.

Fetterman further mentioned that members of his party seem hesitant to confront Mamdani directly. He expressed frustration that a prominent figure like the mayor would publicly reject a Supreme Court decision, calling it a serious constitutional issue.

This discussion comes in the wake of two significant rulings from the Supreme Court that have favored the Trump administration’s immigration policies, especially concerning the decreased ability of immigrants to claim asylum.

In the first case, Marin v. Al Otro Lado, the court decided that individuals who are turned away at the border do not have the right to seek asylum. The second case, Marin v. Doe, ruled that Haitians and Syrians with TPS lack legal grounds to delay the revocation of their status while they challenge the administration’s decisions in court.

Collectively, these judgments could allow the Trump administration to tighten asylum regulations significantly and potentially end temporary protections for certain immigrants already in the U.S. In response to these developments, Mamdani has asserted that his administration would “never accept” the court’s decision regarding deportation protections for these immigrant groups.

Fetterman has consistently warned about the rise of far-left politicians within the party, including Mamdani, who he believes may be gaining too much influence. Candidates across the country, such as Maine state senator Graham Planter and several progressive hopefuls in New York City, are sparking broader discussions about the Democratic Party’s shifting dynamics.
