Exclusive Freedom 250 Social Security cards for babies born in 2026

Exclusive: Commemorative Social Security Cards for Newborns

In a unique initiative, millions of babies born in the United States during the nation’s 250th anniversary will receive a special commemorative Social Security card. This initiative is part of a new program from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

The limited-edition card will be issued to infants born between July 2 and December 31, 2026. While it will function like a standard Social Security card, it will feature the official Freedom 250 logo. This was announced by the SSA, which shared the information exclusively.

Unlike other commemorative items like coins or stamps, this card will serve as one of the first official federal documents many American children will receive.

The Freedom 250 card is intended as a unique souvenir marking the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding. It will only be available for a brief six-month period.

Frank J. Bisignano, SSA Secretary, noted that “Freedom 250 celebrates America’s storied history and the monumental moments that have shaped our nation, including the creation of Social Security more than 90 years ago.” He added, “The next generation of Americans born in this historic year will receive a limited-edition Social Security card emblazoned with the Freedom 250 logo.”

This special designation is exclusively for original cards issued through the Enumeration of Births program during the specified period. Babies born outside this timeframe or those needing a replacement card will receive the standard version.

Parents don’t have to do anything extra; no additional fees or documentation are required for this commemorative version.

According to the SSA, these cards will be issued automatically through the Birth Enumeration Program. When parents complete birth registration paperwork at hospitals or with licensed midwives, they can request the numbers. Importantly, the SSA stated that there will be no additional cost to families or taxpayers for these commemorative cards.

The commemorative design does not alter the child’s Social Security number or the card’s legal function. Replacement or duplicate cards issued later will not carry the Freedom 250 designation.

The SSA has been issuing Social Security numbers through this birth count program since 1987, collaborating with hospitals and state vital records offices. Since over 3.5 million children are born in the U.S. annually, many families could benefit from this initiative during the designated period.

However, the SSA cautioned parents to watch out for scammers. The agency clarified, “SSA will never send you a phone call, text message, or email requesting payment to obtain a commemorative card or something similar for your child.” Parents won’t need to register or provide any information beyond what’s customary in birth registrations.

This announcement coincides with other initiatives from the Trump administration aimed at supporting American youth, such as the Trump Account, designed to help families save for their children’s futures.

For many, a Social Security card is one of the first federal documents received. For those born during this significant anniversary, it will serve as a memorable token of their entrance into the world at this historic time.
