Lothar Matthäus points to WAGs as the reason for Germany's World Cup disappointment

Germany Legend Critiques Team After World Cup Exit

Following Germany’s surprising defeat to Paraguay in a penalty shootout at the World Cup held at Boston Stadium, Lothar Matthäus, a legend in German football, expressed his disappointment. He pointed out that the players seemed unfocused and were approaching the 2026 World Cup more like a “free family” vacation in America.

In an interview with German outlet Bild, Matthäus reflected on the distractions both on and off the field. He mentioned his family’s involvement and the overwhelming headlines concerning them. He has a rich history in the sport, having captained West Germany to victory in 1990.

Matthäus, who represented Germany on 150 occasions, noted that there was significant anxiety within the squad, largely stemming from family travel arrangements. “I really don’t understand why the entire family needs to be part of this,” he remarked. He elaborated on the complications around travel and hotel arrangements that had circulated among team members, even if it wasn’t openly discussed in the media.

He described a specific instance where one player felt angry because his mother was allowed to accompany him, while another had to fly commercially, which led to some discord within the group. He inferred that, overall, the genuine focus on the World Cup was lacking, as players appeared more concerned with family activities.

Matthäus mentioned, “They’ve been in America for less than two weeks, and already, many families have returned home. If the squad achieves something significant, maybe they’ll rejoin for the quarterfinals.” He pointed out the attendance of Annika Neuer, wife of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, at a match in Foxborough.

Another goalkeeper, Oliver Baumann, was also observed with his wife in the stands after their team lost to Ecuador. The German team, which has won the World Cup four times, faced a historic setback as this was their first loss in a World Cup penalty shootout.

Looking ahead, Paraguay is set to face France in the Round of 16 at Philadelphia Stadium on Saturday.
