NYC Budget Excludes Police Staffing Increases
New York City’s latest budget does not plan for authorizing more police positions, even though that had been a consideration. Mayor Zoran Mamdani, identifying as a democratic socialist, addressed reporters on Tuesday, sharing, “I’ve been discussing with all the commissioners ways to save costs. Together with Director Tisch, we found a way to keep the NYPD’s personnel at the initially authorized level of 35,000 while still addressing our crime-fighting needs and rolling out new initiatives from earlier this year.”
The mayor’s office was contacted by Fox News Digital for further clarification on Wednesday.
A statement from the NYPD to Fox News Digital highlighted the city’s tough financial situation. It noted, “The Mayor has urged agency leaders to seek efficiencies. Commissioner Tisch has a history of leading city agencies and finding efficiencies, even when facing tight budgets. We have enough staffing in our budget to manage effectively and reduce crime. This workforce plan enables us to maintain that balance in the upcoming fiscal year.”
Earlier this month, the Democratic Socialist Party of New York voiced opposition to a proposed increase in police staffing. A member tweeted, “We urge Mayor Mamdani to retract the plan to enlarge the NYPD and instead invest in community safety initiatives.”
City Councilwoman Tiffany Caban, representing the NYC-DSA, expressed pride in collaborating with the mayor and public safety advocates. She remarked, “Every dollar allocated to policing means one less for housing, mental health, and economic stability. These are the strategies that truly keep our communities secure and thriving.”
Mamdani has faced criticism for heralding victory over capitalism following a significant bailout funded by taxpayers. He concluded that this budget represents a crucial step away from ineffective enforcement policies, paving the way for a public safety framework based on care rather than punishment.
