Jaylen Brown Traded to Philadelphia 76ers
In a surprising turn of events, Jaylen Brown is no longer with the Boston Celtics. Reports indicate that the Celtics have made a deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, sending Brown to the 76ers in return for veteran All-Star Paul George, along with two first-round draft picks and two second-round picks.
Trade speculations had been swirling since the offseason began. At one point, Brown was even in discussions for a potential trade involving Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks, which ultimately fell through when the Miami Heat acquired Antetokounmpo instead. After that, it seemed the Celtics ramped up their efforts to finalize something with Brown.
Brown, who has had a significant impact in Boston, was named the Finals MVP not too long ago. He played a key role in bringing titles to the franchise. However, reports suggest that the Celtics are actively looking to move Brown and are marketing him to around eight to ten other teams in the league.
According to Shams Charania from ESPN, the Celtics have been pushing for this trade aggressively, and they’ve received interest from multiple organizations. It’s still unclear how close they are to a final agreement or what might unfold next, but it seems they have a solid asking price in mind.
Interestingly, it appears that Brown did not request a trade, which is a situation that could have benefitted the Celtics. They now face a formidable Eastern Conference opponent and aim to bolster their roster, perhaps aspiring to create a new “Big Four.” Brown’s arrival in Philadelphia means he will join forces with former MVP Joel Embiid, All-NBA guard Tyrese Maxey, and rookie standout VJ Edgecomb. Collectively, this lineup could become a real challenge for defenses next season.
Currently, Brown holds a five-year contract extension worth over $285 million with the Celtics, and he’s set to carry a significant cap hit going into the next season. Throughout his time in Boston, he’s earned All-Star accolades five times over ten years, including four straight seasons starting from 2022-23. Yet, some controversy arose this offseason, particularly after his comment about last season being his “favorite year,” despite the team’s disappointing playoff run against the 76ers.
Though it’s hard to pin down the reasoning behind the Celtics wanting to trade him, the failed attempt to land Antetokounmpo earlier suggests they are ready to make bold moves.
On the Celtics’ end, they had been busy prior to this trade, recently securing backup center Mitchell Robinson from the New York Knicks, a move that strengthens their frontcourt. Robinson is likely to step into the starting lineup alongside Jayson Tatum, Derrick White, Sam Hauser, and potentially Payton Pritchard.
As for the 76ers, acquiring Brown adds yet another layer of scoring capability. He’s coming off a standout season where he averaged nearly 29 points, almost 7 rebounds, and over 5 assists per game.
