England Fans Hold Their Breath in Atlanta

For over 70 minutes, the atmosphere among England fans in Atlanta was tense—almost eerily quiet. Those who expected to enjoy a straightforward victory over the Democratic Republic of the Congo found themselves growing increasingly anxious.

A goal by DR Congo in the seventh minute left England reeling, struggling to respond due to a mix of impressive goalkeeping by Lionel Mpathi and sheer bad luck. Just when it seemed all hope was lost, Harry Kane took matters into his own hands. He equalized with a header in the 75th minute and then confirmed England’s victory with an incredible goal about ten minutes later.

Kane isn’t new to the national team scene. Since joining in 2015 and captaining during the 2018 and 2022 World Cups—where he earned the Golden Boot—his presence feels different this time. He seems more ready to actively lift his team when faced with challenges, rather than simply being a key player by title.

At 32, Kane’s accumulated experience has made him one of the most impactful players this World Cup.

Though Kylian Mbappé shares the spotlight with him as a top contender for the Golden Boot, both players have an unparalleled influence within their respective teams. Their performances represent a new era for national pride.

For Kane, the narrative has shifted from ‘England has Harry Kane’ to ‘England is Harry Kane’, similar to how icons like Messi, Haaland, Mbappé, and Ronaldo have embodied their nations through individual excellence.

Despite this, it’s interesting that Kane continues to be seen as one of football’s most underrated figures. He may not possess the flair of Mbappé, the speed of Lamine Yamal, the vision of Messi, or the physicality of Haaland. Still, he’s a dedicated striker, always in the right spot to make a difference.

This fact was clear on Wednesday afternoon when England desperately needed a hero. While his teammates struggled, Kane’s extraordinary talent shone through, potentially saving England’s tournament aspirations. In doing so, he not only reinforced his status as a superstar but also bolstered his claim to be the greatest international player England has ever had.
