Emergency Water Landing of U.S. Helicopter in Arabian Sea

A U.S. 5th Fleet helicopter made an emergency water landing in the Arabian Sea early on Wednesday, as stated by U.S. Navy Central Command.

The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. ET. The helicopter, which had a crew of four, managed to recover three members, but one crew member remains unaccounted for.

This helicopter was identified as an MH-60S Seahawk assigned to the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77). Reports suggest that the emergency was not due to hostile actions.

U.S. Central Command did not provide comments on the matter, and the U.S. 5th Fleet similarly declined to elaborate further.

The MH-60S Seahawk is adaptable for various missions, including combat support and humanitarian aid, among others. However, details about the cargo it was carrying at the time of the incident remain unclear.

Valued between $25 million and $31 million, the helicopter is part of a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, the USS George H.W. Bush, which accommodates roughly 5,000 crew members.

This emergency landing happened against a backdrop of heightened tensions between the U.S. and Iran, following exchanges of attacks reported recently. The U.S. conducted airstrikes after claims that Iran had breached a ceasefire agreement.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps has been accused of attacks on commercial vessels as tensions escalate in the region.
