AI’s Impact on Hollywood: A Mixed Bag of Reactions
Hollywood often voices concerns, threats, and warnings about the rise of AI, but honestly, it seems somewhat overblown. It appears that AI will offer a more affordable way to produce entertainment, and it might even let people—especially older generations—hold on to their nostalgia. It’s almost comical how pointless the resistance to AI feels sometimes.
Take the situation with Martin Scorsese, for instance. Some guild members have put him in hot water for using AI in place of traditional crew members for certain tasks. Recently, Netflix managed to bring back the beloved Gene Wilder, allowing him to reprise his iconic role as Willy Wonka.
According to a report from Variety:
AI is helping bring Wilder back to life. Netflix has teamed up with Eleven Labs, an AI audio company, to recreate Wilder’s voice from his legendary portrayal in 1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Sadly, Wilder passed away in 2016. This revival is part of a new unscripted show, Wonka’s Golden Ticket.
Premiering on September 23 and produced by Eureka Productions, the show features 12 “Golden Ticket” winners and their partners competing in various challenges inspired by both the film and Roald Dahl’s book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The ultimate winner is promised “Wonka’s Life-Changing Prize,” though it doesn’t mention anything about an endless supply of chocolate.
It’s intriguing that the industry’s biggest players can resurrect actors to perform in major productions while simultaneously bemoaning AI’s role in things like storyboarding.
It feels a bit like shutting the barn door after the horses have bolted. This is simply the direction we’re headed.
Whether or not Johnny Depp or Timothée Chalamet have portrayed Willy Wonka doesn’t really matter. Nor does it matter how many aspiring actors would jump at the chance to take on this role.
What truly matters? Gene Wilder’s unique genius and his ability to connect with fans never faltered. Even a decade after his passing, he is still cherished. The desire to bring him back continues to resonate.
Thanks to AI, Wilder can once again embody Willy Wonka. Given the movie’s theme, we can expect some enchanting moments.
Just think—if Hollywood could fully leverage this technology, perhaps stars like Burt Reynolds or Marilyn Monroe could also return. Imagine the potential revenue from beloved actors who could virtually star in new productions! Studios might soon realize how AI can help realize directors’ ambitious visions without the usual on-set tensions and hassles.
Even decades after his death, John Wayne remains an emblem of American cinema. Why shouldn’t his estate capitalize on his legacy by creating more films in his honor?
I find AI fascinating. I’m not naive; I don’t worry about it becoming too intelligent.
Now, with Gene Wilder back as Willy Wonka, we can finally move past those characters that have let us down over the years.
Only those resistant to change could find such news anything but exciting.
