Giants Face Infield Challenges with Injuries
PHOENIX — The San Francisco Giants are starting off on a tough note, missing their starting shortstop and now facing at least ten days without significant players in their infield.
On Wednesday, third baseman Matt Chapman was placed on the 10-day injured list due to an abdominal strain. To fill the gap, the Giants have promoted utility infielder Christian Koss from Triple-A, ensuring they have at least a minimal presence in the infield.
With Willie Adames sidelined for the third consecutive game because of back spasms, Koss quickly stepped into the shortstop position. Meanwhile, Casey Schmidt, who had been covering shortstop recently, returned to his usual role at third base.
Interestingly, the Giants opted not to make any roster adjustments even with Adames out during Sunday’s game. This situation left them short on infielders after Chapman was ejected in the seventh inning of Tuesday’s outing. Now outfielder Jonah Cox, who hasn’t played infield since his college days, will take on the role of second baseman. Luis Arraez will also be at third base, where he hasn’t played since 2022.
Chapman mentioned that he has been dealing with inconsistent discomfort around his hip flexors and the lower part of his body since early May. After a challenging play in the sixth inning, where he made an impressive but taxing move against Gabriel Moreno, Chapman found he could no longer continue.
He attempted to remain in the game and got back to bat in the top of the seventh, although it was evident he was in considerable discomfort and was later replaced defensively.
The situation is quite unfortunate, especially with Adames currently out. Nevertheless, the Giants are hopeful that their shortstop will be back in time for their series against the Colorado Rockies this Friday at Coors Field.
Add to this the fact that Chapman had already planned on missing three games for personal reasons—his wife, Taylor, is expecting the birth of their first child, a son named Jack, this weekend.
