DSA Candidate Advocates for Immediate Citizenship Path for Undocumented Immigrants
Melat Quiroz, a candidate for the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), believes there should be an “immediate path” to citizenship for all undocumented individuals living in the United States.
Her recent victory over a long-standing Democratic congressman in Colorado’s 1st Congressional District during the primary reflects a trend showing that socialist ideals are influencing the Democratic Party beyond just New York.
Quiroz holds several progressive views, emphasizing the need for immediate citizenship options for illegal immigrants without burdensome costs or prolonged processes.
“Abolishing ICE is a step forward, right?” she remarked in a recent interview. “Democrats have held power numerous times over the last few decades and have failed to enact any significant immigration reform.”
She further argued, “For every undocumented immigrant in this country, there should be an immediate pathway to citizenship that doesn’t require them to spend thousands or wait years. It should be immediate.”
Her perspectives extend beyond immigration. As reported by various sources, she has called for a “Trans Bill of Rights,” commenting that events like 9/11 were “inevitable” and labeling any surgeries on children for gender transition as “horrifying.”
“We’re in the process of updating our website now. I wrote all our policy pages last year, but we’re refreshing the content this week to include a transgender bill of rights,” Quiroz noted, underlining the importance of empowering the transgender agenda.
“We need to be strong and clear in advocating for the trans community, especially for trans kids,” she added, criticizing a particular ballot measure in Colorado that she views as extremely harmful to young transgender individuals.
One such measure, Initiative No. 110, aims to prohibit surgeries that alter minors’ genitalia, which she vehemently opposes.
Quiroz has also spoken out in favor of abortion rights, arguing that it is critical for women’s “economic freedom” and claiming that access to reproductive health options must be guaranteed. She connects reproductive health care with “gender-affirming services,” aligning abortion rights with issues like hormone therapy and puberty blockers.
“We need to ensure access to all aspects of reproductive health, including contraception, maternal health, and gender-affirming care,” her platform states, emphasizing the urgent need to address maternal mortality, particularly among Black women, while not addressing the stark disparities related to abortion rates among Black populations.
The Progressive Political Action Committee, Justice Democrats, commented after Quiroz’s win, stating, “Mellatt has inspired Denverites to recognize their power to reshape the representation they desire,” suggesting that this shift toward socialism in the party is becoming increasingly prominent.
