Ukraine’s Alleged Role in Drug Cartels’ European Expansion
Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has claimed that Ukraine is facilitating Mexican drug cartels’ entry into European markets by exploiting weak border security. This strategy is thought to be a response to intensified efforts by the U.S. to tackle drug trafficking in Latin America.
The announcement came this week from the SVR, which released a statement through its press office. However, specific details regarding the cartels involved or the nature of their operations were not disclosed. Russian officials assert that this collaboration could generate income for Ukraine, enabling it to recruit foreign mercenaries. Additionally, cartels are reportedly interested not just in distribution routes but also in accessing the European black market for military arms.
The SVR criticized what it termed the “corrupt Zelenskiy regime,” suggesting it is looking for more funding, especially given the lack of support from Western allies. They also mentioned that Ukraine is assisting Latin American drug cartels in their efforts to hire mercenaries for military purposes.
According to the report, these cartels could potentially enter Europe via Poland, Moldova, Romania, and the port of Odessa. A significant issue is the inadequate border security in Ukraine and nearby regions, a situation exacerbated by the ongoing conflict.
This intelligence release followed U.S. President Donald J. Trump’s announcement about a successful operation aimed at cartel ships. He also suggested that drug cartels had gained dominance in Mexico while President Claudia Sheinbaum appeared to be paralyzed by fear, as reported by Breitbart Texas.
