Pochettino Celebrates Historic Win for USMNT
It was quite an evening for Mauricio Pochettino.
He achieved a milestone by becoming the U.S. men’s head coach with the most World Cup victories, leading the USMNT to a 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32, marking the first knockout-round triumph since 2002 in Santa Clara, California.
During the celebration at Levi’s Stadium, Pochettino joined fans in singing “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” a catchy tradition that the team has embraced this World Cup.
Fox stations opted for silence, allowing the sounds of the stadium to carry over to viewers at home. Midfielder Weston McKennie was actively engaging the crowd, directing their energy toward the players.
Fans outside the stadium also chimed in with their own renditions of the song.
Pochettino has successfully led the team to first place in Group D, winning their opening matches against Paraguay and Australia.
So far, his record with the team stands at 17 wins, 2 losses, and 11 draws.
As his contract nears its expiration after this tournament, it’s uncertain if he will continue as the head coach of U.S. Soccer. The federation has proposed an extension that could see him remain through another World Cup cycle, lasting until 2030.
However, any final decisions on his future will wait until after the conclusion of the 2026 Games.
Pochettino’s squad has been vibrant, feeding off the crowd’s energy since the tournament began, and their home advantage is palpable, especially during such a significant match.
Next, the United States will take on Belgium in the Round of 16 in Seattle on Monday at 8 p.m. ET.
