John Brennan Sues Trump Administration Over Investigations
Former CIA Director John Brennan has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, asking the court to mandate that officials maintain records relating to criminal probes that involve him.
Brennan, who was the CIA director from 2013 to 2017 under President Barack Obama, is seeking a preliminary injunction from the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He claims he is the current target of two federal investigations led by the Department of Justice, which he argues infringes on his constitutional rights.
In the legal filing, Brennan’s attorneys suggest that these investigations were initiated at President Trump’s direct request and revolve around “hypothetical criminal activity.”
“Regrettably, some individuals within the Justice Department and FBI have aligned with this agenda, allowing the department to be used as a tool for retaliation against Brennan and others seen as opponents of the President,” the filing claims.
Recently, it was reported that the Justice Department began questioning both current and former CIA officials regarding Brennan’s role in the 2017 assessment of Russian interference in the 2016 election. Brennan has consistently denied any misconduct in relation to the Russia investigation and defended the intelligence community’s conclusion about Russian interference.
Sources indicated that investigators had interviewed approximately a dozen officials involved in creating the assessment, focusing on the reasoning behind its conclusions and whether Brennan misled Congress during his testimony in 2023.
The investigation also looks into whether the intelligence community’s assessment was swayed by the controversial Steele dossier, which contained largely unfounded claims about Trump’s connections to Russia, allegedly funded by political opponents.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche appointed former Trump attorney Joseph diGenova to lead the investigation, thereby granting him a prominent role in this high-profile matter.
Brennan’s legal team alleges that the Trump administration has overstepped its bounds, violating Brennan’s constitutional rights and laying the groundwork for challenges to any potential charges, including motions to dismiss based on claims of retaliatory prosecution.
They further contend that during these government-directed investigations, certain officials engaged in actions that breached ethical norms and legal boundaries for prosecutorial behavior.
The filing states, “These actions included suggesting a predetermined guilt of Director Brennan, making public statements about aspects of the ongoing grand jury investigation, and dismissing career prosecutors reluctant to pursue politically motivated charges.”
Brennan’s claim also states that the Trump administration has neglected its responsibilities regarding the preservation of critical records and communications relevant to his legal and constitutional challenges.
He has requested the court to issue an order compelling the Trump administration to keep all relevant materials and communications intact.
The lawsuit was submitted by Brennan’s attorney, identifying Blanche as a defendant in the case.
In response, a representative from the Justice Department stated: “While we cannot disclose specifics about ongoing investigations, it is noteworthy that John Brennan is making accusations of a ‘retaliation campaign.’”
